Mullvad is the provider Reddit trusts most, and it earned that the hard way rather than through marketing. In April 2023 six officers from the Swedish national police arrived at its Gothenburg office with a search warrant for customer data. Mullvad showed them how the service works, the police consulted the prosecutor, and they left without taking anything, because there was nothing to take. Everything else follows the same logic: an account is a 16-digit number with no email and no name attached, you can pay in cash in an envelope or in Monero, the price is a flat 5 euros a month with no discounts and no renewal trick, and three independent audits were published in 2026 alone. It is second here rather than first only because of what it refuses to do, and the list is long and getting longer. Netflix does not work and Mullvad does not pretend to try. Port forwarding was removed in July 2023 after the feature was abused, which hurts seeding. OpenVPN was switched off entirely on 15 January 2026, so it is WireGuard or nothing. On 14 September the US Department of Justice announced a deferred prosecution agreement covering three former US intelligence operatives who had built zero-click spyware for the UAE under Project Raven, and one of them, Daniel Gericke, was ExpressVPN’s chief information officer. Kape was called Crossrider until 2018 and distributed adware under that name. It also owns Private Internet Access, CyberGhost and ZenMate, and it owns vpnMentor, a VPN review site that ranks ExpressVPN highly. Why r/VPN Bans the Question
The rule says why, in the rule
r/VPN has been open since April 2009 and it is the obvious place to ask which VPN to buy, but it is the one place you cannot. Rule 3 forbids naming specific providers and states its reason directly: the rule is enforced because of the commercial nature of most VPN providers. Rule 4 forbids asking for or giving provider recommendations anywhere except a single pinned megathread. Rule 7 forbids commercial and affiliate links, and sites that contain them, which includes pages like this one. The subreddit’s wiki index has also been disabled by its moderators, so if you have seen a VPN site claim that “the r/VPN wiki recommends” something, it is describing a list that does not exist.
What it publishes instead is criteria
The FAQ is still there, and it is genuinely useful precisely because it names nobody. It tells you to weigh the logging policy first, then the encryption and protocols on offer and whether there is a kill switch, then whether the apps cover the devices you own and how many you can connect at once, then the server network and the speed, then whether support is any good. It also tells you to avoid free VPNs, on the grounds that a provider with no subscription revenue is funded by something else. That is a better checklist than most paid reviews produce, and it costs nothing to apply to any provider on this page.
Where the recommendations actually live
They move to the privacy communities, and those point at Privacy Guides: a non-profit list, run alongside r/PrivacyGuides, which states on its own about page that it makes no money from recommending products and uses no affiliate links.
