TigerVPN Review
With the alarming increase in cyber insecurity, more individuals are beginning to embrace VPNs as a means of staying safe, secure and anonymous online.
One of the VPNs that has identified itself as a solution to online insecurity is TigerVPN. While it may not be the leader of the pack, the Slovakian-based VPN claims its mighty enough to repel any threat. But how true is this claim? You will know the answer in this detailed and extensive review of TigerVPN.

Is TigerVPN a free or paid service?
TigerVPN is a paid VPN through and through, with no options for a free trial sadly. This is good in a way, as most free VPN compromise users' security, privacy, and safety. However, some offer great service at no cost, Windscribe is one of such.
We will discuss all TigerVPN's paid plans later on in this article.
Performance
A VPN’s worth is known by the performance it puts up. Here, two factors are taken into consideration—speed and stability. Let’s see how fast and how stable TigerVPN is.
Speed
Speed is what determines how fast the content you upload or download will be. Hence, if you are streaming or torrenting, for instance, you would want the speed to be the same as that of your internet speed. But since a VPN encrypts your data, it usually takes some time sending your information back and forth, thereby slowing down the internet connection.
For this reason, you need a VPN that does not significantly reduce your connection speed more than necessary. We are quite impressed with TigerVPN’s speed even if we found its performance across several servers to be inconsistent.
For example, while its Canadian and US servers were pretty fast, its UK servers were very slow. Here are details of our speed test:
UK server:
We experienced a speed drop with the UK server. We connected to the VPN’s London and Manchester servers, where we managed to get a speed of 16.92 Mbps. It was not a good result.
Canada Server:
We also tried out servers in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver. Here, we managed to get better results, with the speed coming at 28.29 Mbps.
US server:
Finally, we concluded our test by connecting to servers in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington DC. We did get a good result in the US; we had an average speed of about 27.54 Mbps.
Overall, while TigerVPN is quite fast, it's sometimes inconsistent.
Top internet speed
TigerVPN is quite silent on specifics including its top internet speed. However, the fastest speed is those in closer range to the point of connection. Therefore, you will get the best internet speed when connecting to closeby servers.
Also, the VPN has SLA monitoring. The feature checks the VPN's network status round the clock. In doing that, users can see how stable their network connection is.
The average decrease in internet speed
The average decrease in internet speed depends on where you are connecting from and how far the server is. Overall, if connecting from the UK to a server in the UK, you can expect an average decrease in internet speed of 18%. Connecting from the UK to a server in France will yield an average decrease of 20%. The farther the distance, the higher the decrease in connection.
Stability
After thoroughly testing and reviewing TigerVPN, we conclude that the VPN is not one of the most stable VPNs on the market. This is because asides from the slow speed we experienced sometimes, the ping was also high especially when connected to far distances such as Asia.
Also, our internet connection was affected as a result of the inconsistent speed. We were unable to surf the internet for a long time, not without being kicked out every 15 minutes or so. This was the case for servers in China especially.
Streaming
Before 2016, VPNs had no issues accessing streaming platforms such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and so on. The case is different these days though and this is because many of these streaming platforms have sophisticated technology that blocks access to their platform. Yet, some VPNs can unblock these sites. Is TigerVPN one of such VPNs? Let’s find out.
Netflix
As we mentioned earlier, some streaming platforms (Netflix especially) does all it can to block access to its site. Hence, we didn’t have much hope for TigerVPN.
Surprisingly, the service provider proved us wrong. Although the results were a bit inconsistent, the VPN was able to access Netflix from anywhere. Note though, that this was only possible when we connected to certain servers like those in the US. Still, we are glad the provider can do this.
BBC iPlayer
If you are one of those who love British programs, movies, and shows and are hoping to access BBC iPlayer with TigerVPN, well you have two choices—either take a chance and see if it works, or look elsewhere entirely.
Why? Well, because while BBC iPlayer does work with TigerVPN, it's not always consistent. We connected to a server in Manchester and tried streaming "Luther" and it worked. However, the streaming quality wasn’t the best neither was the speed consistent.
Others?
We were also able to unblock Hulu, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and so on. Overall, the VPN does well in accessing streaming sites. However, whether or not you will experience buffering or have an enjoyable time depends on your internet connection.
Security
What’s a VPN if it can’t provide safety, security, and privacy? Because security is an all-important feature for every true VPN, we placed TigerVPN on the hot seat and scrutinized it thoroughly to know what security features it provides and if it can be trusted. Let’s see what we discovered.
Where is it based?
Founded in 2011, TigerVPN has its base in Slovakia. It was then relaunched in 2016 after a series of improvement and alterations. The VPN now has new websites, new apps and better encryptment features. The VPN has it office right in the heart of Romania, hence the company is subject to Romania laws.
Just so you know, Slovakia is a country with no data retention laws and no internet censorship. Also, the country isn't a member of the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, or Fourteen Eyes surveillance alliance.
Since Slovakia is free from any mandatory data retention laws, it means TigerVPN isn’t under any obligation to log the data of its users. Let’s consider TigerVPN’s data retention laws to see if it logs any data.
Log policy
Although TigerVPN claims to be a no-log VPN, no VPN is truly one. It is because service providers need some sort of information to work with. For TigerVPN, it does keep retain information, but these are only connection data. Here is a piece of the company’s privacy policy:
“At no time, we store, read, analyze, or in any other way process, the traffic exchanged between you, our servers, and the public internet. In other words, we do not save, read or have technical access to any DNS queries, websites you visit, data you transferred, or communications.
TigerVPN sells a subscription to pay for its service and has never and will never sell, share, or give away any data”.
Here are some data the company agrees to log:
- Account information (including email address and password)
- Financial information (PayPal, Credit Card details, etc.)
- Tax & Vat information (geographical location and timestamp)
- Abuse and fraud prevention
- VPN service data (including VPN version and protocol, VPN operating system, app version, server location, traffic data, frequently used servers, and debug information)
While all of the information collected are non-identifiable data, we aren't comfortable with the amount of data being collected. But then, it has a pretty strong privacy policy, hence, we are willing to concede that TigerVPN is somewhat a no-log VPN service provider.
Protocols
TigerVPN does fairly well in this regard, it is well equipped with the right protocols and encryption. To start with, the VPN features AES 256-bit encryption along with 2048-bit RSA. Just so you know, AES 256-bit encryption is the industry-standard encryption expected of all VPNs. It is because it is super strong and secure and cannot be hacked into by anyone (it would take a billion years even if you try). Its also used by the military and financial institutions—a testament to its reliability and security.
In terms of protocols, TigerVPN doesn't offer much. It only offers OpenVPN (TCP & UDP). OpenVPN is one of the strongest and best protocol currently. The open-source protocol ensues your data does not get into the wrong hands. It also supports L2TP and PPTP protocols. These VPNs are what ensures the VPN can run smoothly on Android and IOS devices.
Sadly, the VPN does not support split tunneling, neither does it feature ad-blocker nor obfuscation tools. These days, VPNs offer these features for better security, and more options to users.
Leak protection
Some features prevent a safe and secure browsing experience and these include WebRTC leaks, IP leaks, and DNS leaks. Hence, a truly safe VPN should not have any of these leaks.
We tested TigerVPN to see if it leaks any of these data and we are glad to say TigerVPN does not have DNS leaks, IP leaks, or WebRTC leaks.
Torrenting
Truth be told, everyone wants a VPN that's secure, safe, and can provide anonymity. But beyond that, humans also want a VPN that can provide extra services such as streaming and torrenting. Torrenting in particular is a great feature as it allows you to download, upload and send large files in mere minutes. Does TigerVPN support torrenting? Read on to find out.
Is torrenting allowed?
Yes, TigerVPN supports peer-to-peer torrenting. If you are a frequent more torrent, they should be great news. However, TigerVPN strongly advises that torrenting should only be for legal purposes. Thus, it's safe to say, that while the VPN allows torrenting, it doesn't encourage it.
When we tested it out, we didn’t have any problems torrenting files. Note though, that the VPN has a limited server network, hence performance may always be inconsistent.
Is there a kill switch?
Kill switch ensures your data does not leak in cases when you experience an unexpected VPN disconnection. The feature is a must-have for all VPNs as, without it, your data will get exposed and defeat the purpose of using a VPN.
Disappointingly, TigerVPN does not feature a Kill Switch. We wonder why a VPN will compromise its users’ safety, security, and privacy this way. If you love your privacy, we suggest you consider other options that have an automatic kill switch.
Bypassing censorship
So, you crave some Chinese movies or want to watch some interesting programs and shows in Iran or probably UAE. But what you don't know is that these countries (and some others) have strict censorship, hence you can't access their network. The good news is that you can bypass these censorships with a VPN. The bad news, however, is that most VPNs are unable to perform this function. Let's see where TigerVPN falls in this regard.
In censored countries
We tried using TigerVPN to bypass the Great Wall of China and sadly, we weren’t able to. While we were able to connect to servers in Hong Kong and Hanoi, we were unable to unblock websites such as Baidu and QQ.
We aren't surprised though seeing as the VPN does not have any obfuscation tools. These tools would have helped unblock these censorships. And because it lacks this tool, it was also unable to access other censored countries including Iran, Turkey, UAE, and so on.
In restricted networks
No doubt the internet can be addictive. You might wish to surf the internet or access your social media platform for just some minutes, but before you know, minutes turn to hours, and the whole day is gone. For reasons such as this and many more, some companies and schools restrict access to certain websites and social media platforms.
But TigerVPN believes in protecting the right of everyone to the internet. The VPN can get past these restrictions easily. So, when next you find yourself in such repressive environment, simply connect to TigerVPN and carry on your business like nothing ever happened.
Countries and servers
An ideal VPN should have a global presence. The more servers present in many countries, the easier it is to connect to these servers and carry on with your online activities, whether it's torrenting, streaming, or just browsing. Does TigerVPN have a global reach? We will find out shortly.
Countries covered
TigerVPN boasts of having 300+ servers spread across 62 locations covering 42 countries universally. This is far less than what top-tier VPNs such as ExpressVPN and NordVPN offer. Yet, the VPN has a global presence and that’s a good place to start.
There are servers in Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America. There's also a server in South Africa, but we would love to see more servers in more African countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, and so on.
Overall, there are servers in countries such as Sydney, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Miami, Amsterdam, Bucharest, Tokyo, Ankara, and so on.
Server
TigerVPN has no specialized or dedicated servers for activities like streaming and torrenting. While having specialized servers does aid in fast, easy, and smooth connection, not having a dedicated server could be a good thing sometimes as it means all the servers are optimized for all activities.
The servers are also always available, if they are not, then it would be temporal and likely due to maintenance. It happens and is nothing to worry about.
Compatible devices and simultaneous connections
Determining if your VPN can work with your device is very important as this would prevent you from wasting your time, energy, and resources on the wrong product. Let’s see what devices Tiger VPN is compatible with and how many connections it permits per time.
What device can you use with TigerVPN?
Fortunately, TigerVPN is compatible with all major devices including:
- Windows
- Mac
- Android
- IOS
- DD-WRR
- Linux
- Chromebooks
- Routers
Note though, rather than go the route of directly downloading the apps, you will have to depend on manual setups. On the VPN’s website, you will find manual setup guides to help you get started.
How many simultaneous connections?
The number of simultaneous connections it allows is dependent on the plan subscribed for. For instance, its one-month plan allows only two simultaneous connections. There’s also its 12-month plan that allows up to three simultaneous connections while its 3-year plan enables five simultaneous connections. however, its annual and three-year plan seem not to be available anymore.
Regardless, Its number of simultaneous connections is so poor it bothers on ridiculous. Usually, most VPNs offer the industry-standard of five simultaneous connections with any plan (either one month or five years), with some being generous enough to offer as many as 10 or 15 connections at the same time. TigerVPN’s two simultaneous connections with a monthly subscription are not good enough, to say the least.
Client support
There would always be reasons you need help while using a VPN. For that reason and many others, all VPNs ought to have robust customer support. That way, they would be able to proffer solutions to their customers' demands. Let’s see if TigerVPN does great in this aspect.
How to contact it?
TigerVPN has 24/7 live chat support. It is a great feature and in line with industry standards. Its live chat support means you can chat them up and get a response instantaneously. On the downside, you will need to be logged onto the VPN before the feature can be enabled.
Also, the VPN offers an email ticketing system. Here, you send your queries, questions, or complaints via email and then await a response.
Is it good?
We are glad it offers live chat support, but we aren't happy you will need to log in first before being able to chat with a representative. We find the process quite cumbersome. Also, its email ticketing process is very slow. We got a response after several hours of sending an email.
FAQ/tutorials
The VPN has a General Question section where answers to all questions relating to the VPN are provided. Also, there are manual setup guides to put your through when setting up the VPN app on either your Mac, IOS, or Android device.
Besides, the VPN provides a troubleshooting section, where all issues around troubleshooting are provided. Overall, TigerVPN does provide robust customer support.
Value for money
For any product that involves money being spent, you ought to scrutinize it properly to determine if it's worth it. In this next section, we review the price of TigerVPN and determine what payment option it supports.
Price comparison
For a VPN that barely offers the basics, lacks sophisticated features, we think TigerVPN is very expensive. Before now, the VPN offered three plans to choose from, but this seems not to be the case anymore as a recent look through the VPN's website shows it only offers a one-month plan. Again, we believe a VPN should offer a variety of plans to choose from. It could be a technical issue though if so we hope it gets resolved soon.
The one-month subscription comes with access to 63 locations in 43 countries, 2 simultaneous connections, apps for desktop and mobile devices, protocols including IPsec L2TP, PPTP, and OpenVPN. Also, the subscription provides unlimited data and speed, NAT firewall, Gigabit network, and karma reward program.
However, the VPN does not offer a free trial, this is quite disappointing, especially for a VPN that doesn't offer much, to begin with.
Here is a breakdown of the VPN’s price plan:
- Monthly plan: Charged €11.99 per month. You save 20% off its previous price by subscribing to this plan
Means of payment
The VPN only allows payment through:
- Credit Card
- PayPal
That's it. it doesn't support cryptocurrencies or international payments. It is very limiting and further reduces the value of the VPN. if you are one of those that wish for anonymous payment, you may have to look elsewhere.
Money-back guarantee
If after subscribing to a VPN, you find it unsatisfactory, you would want a refund or some sort of compensation. For a VPN that does not offer a free trial, you would expect an extensive refund guarantee at the very least.
Again, we are disappointed with TigerVPN in this regard. The provider only offers a 7-day money-back guarantee. To get a refund, you would first have to cancel your subscription before sending a mail to the company stating your request.
Any Extras?
Most VPNs offer one or two extra features as a means of adding more value to their products. It's also a means of distinguishing one VPN from the other and also a form of attracting and retaining customers.
While TigerVPN has no major extra feature, it does provide some features worth mentioning. They include:
NAT Firewall
The VPN service provider protects you from other VPN users via a hardware firewall. This is great as it enhances security and privacy for private networks by ensuring internal addresses are kept from the view of an external network. So, while there might be lots of people connected to a server, each has its IP address that cannot be seen by others. "It's like having your own self-driving car on a super-fast highway," TigerVPN says.
Full DNS control
TigerVPN says it operates its DNS servers. By having its DNS servers, the VPN can increase the privacy of its customers. Also, users will be able to open websites faster than when using third-party DNS providers.
30% rule
In ensuring its users are always satisfied, TigerVPN has a 30% rule. What this means is that it has reserved 30% of its bandwidth. Thus, if for any reason you require more bandwidth, you only need to reach out and they will allocate more resources and bandwidth to you.
Final thoughts
TigerVPN is certainly not one of the heavyweight VPNs on the market. Rather, it is an average VPN that has moderately fast (albeit inconsistent speed), has a high price, and lacks the advanced features that top-notch VPNs offer. Particularly concerning is its lack of kill switch and obfuscation tools.
Admittedly the VPN does get some things right. Its ability to access Netflix and BBC iplayer enables seamless torrenting and can bypass restricted sites. But one wonders why anyone would subscribe to the VPN when they can get more value at less price.
Overall, we do not recommend TigerVPN, at least not at this time. but with more improvement made, things will begin to look up for the VPN.
