VPN Unlimited Review

Cybercriminals are becoming more emboldened. Once they get access to your online data, they can do all sorts with it. But asides from these criminals there is also the government to worry about. Some sites are also blocked, restricting use to only those in that region.

A VPN can tackle all of this. It ensures cybercriminals and the government have no idea of your online activities. It also grants you access to restricted sites including streaming sites. While there are tons of VPNs available on the market, one that has caught our attention is VPN Unlimited.

Although it has only a handful of servers, it covers a sizeable location including Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Costa Rica, and Libya. This VPN also supports P2P file sharing, offers several protocol supports, and generally has lots of features.

Want to know all about VPN Unlimited and if it’s the VPN of choice? Read on to find out.

Is it a paid or a free VPN?

While many know VPN Unlimited as a paid service, not many know there is a free version available. Its free version is referred to as the Lite Free version. Although it is completely free, it has only one server available. However, it works well on IOS, Android, and macOS.

Its application offers the full range of protocols but automatically selects the "optimal" protocols, hence users are unable to select or change a server. Nevertheless, the VPN won't limit your data usage.

Its paid service on the other hand has over 500 servers which are also available during the free trial period.

Performance

You can’t determine the worth of a VPN without testing its performance. We tested the VPN’s performance using two parameters—speed and stability. How stable is VPN Unlimited? Is it slow? Let’s find out:

Speed

When we tested VPN Unlimited speed, we weren't expecting much. But we were pleasantly surprised. The VPN offers unflinching speed, much to our delight. On the downside, we tested to see if there were exceptional speeds like it promised but were disappointed—there was nothing of such.

The speed was tested across several locations, and we never experienced any remarkable speed, just the basic. Even when we tested it on nearby servers, the speed did not increase. Although it does work for streaming and torrenting, you should expect some buffering.

Stability

A VPN needs to offer a stable connection as no one likes to experience buffering and internet downtime while streaming content. Fortunately, VPN Unlimited is stable, with an uptime of 99.9%. Seeing as it has such remarkable stability, you can be sure the servers will always be available, except for times when it has to be taken down for maintenance which usually doesn't take a long time.

Streaming

Beyond providing anonymity, safety, and security, VPNs also enable users to stream blocked contents. And since streaming has become a favorite pastime of most people, they are always curious about the streaming capacity of a VPN before opting for it. Here is how VPN Unlimited performs in this regard:

Netflix

VPN Unlimited is not known to unblock Netflix. But when we tested it, it worked great. The service provider features a specialized server for Netflix located in California, U.S.A. We tested it for ourselves and were able to connect seamlessly to the server. We could access all the geo-restricted sites without issues.

There was a drawback though and that's its slow speed, which has already been discussed in the speed review. Also, the dedication of only one server for Netflix does not sit well with us, as it limits the options available and will not enable users in farther locations to connect easily.

BBC iPlayer

The service provider works great in the UK. Hence, it came as no surprise that it was able to unblock BBC iPlayer when we tested it. While there are no 100% assurances with streaming, but we can guarantee you will always be able to access BBC iPlayer whenever you wish.

Others?

Asides from Netflix, VPN Unlimited also offers specialized servers for HBO, ESPN+, Hulu, and BBC iPlayer. These specialized servers are made to enhance streaming. And to keep it optimal, the IP address is changed to new unbanned ones to avoid sites from detecting them.

All the sites mentioned are sure to work with the service provider. Users can also access AMC live from anywhere in the world. But if you do have problems access any of the listed sites, you can easily fix it. All you need do is clear your traffic cache and restart the router and PC. Next, utilize the patented KeepSolid Wise protocol while ensuring the VPN you have is the latest version.

Security

The online space is dangerous and insecure, why else will the demand for VPN be this high? This is why it's important to determine and test the security features of a VPN before committing. How is VPN Unlimited security feature like? Read on to find out:

Where is it based?

Although VPN Unlimited is a product of some Ukrainians, the company has its base in the United States. The U.S is a powerful member of the Five Eyes Alliance and collects databases from the infamous NSA, a U.S organization known to obtain data of people.

Many of the practices carried out by the NSA are illegal. They deploy underhanded means including mandating VPNs to provide data of their users. They even go as far as asking other members of the five alliances to track US citizens. From monitoring their phone conversations, email exchanges, to text messages and others.

While this may seem like bad news and may discourage you from opting for VPN Unlimited, in truth, there is little or nothing the NSA can do with your information even if they do lay their hands on it. This is because VPN Unlimited encrypts your data with a 256-bit protocol, the strongest, strong, and unbreakable encrypting method in the world. At best, all the NSA will see will be a string of gibberish. Besides, the U.S.A does not mandate U.S-based VPNs to retain any data, thus this service provider isn't legally bonded to log data.

In summary, regardless of its location and the negative impression U.S tech companies give, VPN companies can only hand over data it retains and since they are not mandated to keep any data, NSA will only be wasting its time. The company does retain some data though, but this is not enough to do any damage as our review and test have shown.

Log policy

When you visit this provider's website, you will see 'Zero-log policy' boldly listed as one of its features. It's easy to read and comprehensive, which is great as you don't have to crack your head to understand the privacy policy, unlike most other VPNs.

But the company claims not to have log users’ information such as connection times, browsing history, downloads, uploads, metadata, IP addresses, and data contents. However, its servers do store the IP address you connected with, this is the only way it can keep communication open, but once you close the VPN, the IP address deletes automatically.

VPN Unlimited does store data such as OS version, geographic location, connection type, and language, but these are also deleted when you close the VPN. Also, the service provider logs your device codes and names and other unique identifiers which enable it to enforce device limits.

Regardless of how innocent this sounds, there's a little more revealing going on. The service provider does not only create a puzzling ID for the windows system as we observed when we tested it, but it also uses a fusion of the name of the Windows and the PC name. Without this little information being logged, then users will be unable to connect to the KeepSolid account. While this seems like it’s not an issue, we aren't too comfortable having a third party have access to that level of information.

That aside, there are no indications the VPN keeps users’ data. We would have felt more reassured having it written on their website. Also, VPNs are starting to engage third-party auditors to reassure their users of the safety of their VPN. VPN Unlimited can take a cue from this, we would be happier and feel more reassured.

Protocols

VPN Unlimited offers lots of protocols. While all the protocols are available on every key platform, the number needed depends on the speed of the server you are connected to. While some of the protocols are fairly new, some are quite old and no longer relevant.

OpenVPN is one of the new generation protocols that VPN Unlimited offers. Its excellent speed, reliability, and stability give it an excellent performance. Also, the protocol is open-source software. This means that lots of developers have worked on its weaknesses, and have fine-tuned it.

The VPN also offers a modified version of OpenVPN called KeepSolid Wise. The protocol makes VPN traffic look like regular HTTPS traffic. It is an exclusive protocol made to access blocked regions such as China and sites such as Netflix.

Users with Windows, Linus, or Android can choose between OpenVPN and KeepSolid Wise. However, users with IOS or macOS devices have three protocols to choose from—IKEv2, Keep Solid Wise, and OpenVPN.

Besides, it's worthy to note that VPN Unlimited also features AES 256-bit encryption. It is used by military organizations and banks, a testament to its strength. To show how strong it is, brute-forcing VPN Unlimited will take more than a million years (and this is even while using the strongest computers). Hence, you can be sure your sensitive data are well protected with this service provider.

Protection against leaks

DNS requests can be sent to your ISP accidentally, leading to exposure of your online activities. However, to prevent this from happening, VPN Unlimited allows users to turn on their DNS leak protection. In simpler terms, third parties will only be able to see what the VPN wants them to see including virtual IP address, ISP, originating region, and hostname.

While there are other data, none is linked to your original identity. Right now, VPN Unlimited makes use of Google Public DNS. Although this DNS has a great performance and a high level of security, the service provider can do better by having DNS servers of its own. We tested the feature and did not notice any leaks.

Torrenting

Not many VPNs support torrenting, owing to the many challenges and controversies around the feature. However, seeing as torrenting is one of the primary reasons many users opt for a VPN, it's worth discussing and testing. So, we also checked out VPN Unlimited torrenting ability to see how it performs. Here is what we got:

Is torrenting allowed?

Torrenting files with this service provider are possible, but there are restrictions. First, users are only able to select from 5 servers. Also, all its torrenting servers are either located in North America or Europe, this means users from other parts of the world may experience a drop in speed, stability, and general performance.

When we tested it, we experienced some downtime occasionally. Hence, we do not advise you to turn on your kill switch while torrenting. Also, the service does not feature a free SOCKS5 proxy. Although it has split tunneling, it's only functional on Android devices, which is no use to torrenting enthusiasts.

Is there a kill switch?

As you would have guessed, VPN Unlimited features a kill switch. But then which VPN doesn't? The all-important feature prevents your data and IP address from leaking during internet downtime. Although most VPN offers this feature, they are not supported on some platforms, (especially apple devices).

Fortunately, VPN Unlimited offers support for kill switches on all major devices. Note though, that when a kill switch does kill your internet connection, it's often difficult coming back online. When we tested it, we had to restart our system a couple of times before the kill switch was disabled.

Bypassing Censorship

It’s frustrating living in a country with suppressive internet regulations. But with a VPN, you can easily bypass these restrictions. The problem however is that not every provider is capable of bypassing these restrictions.

Is VPN Unlimited one of such providers? We shall be revealing that in this next section:

In censored countries

Almost all VPNs are unable to bypass the Great Firewalls of China. Surprisingly, VPN Unlimited doesn't seem to have a problem accessing Chinese content. This is great!

The VPN is perhaps able to do this because of its patented KeepSolid Wise protocols. As earlier stated, this protocol cloaks VPN internet traffic, making it looks like normal HTTPS traffic. With this, it’s difficult for unapproved IP addresses to be detected and blocked, thereby enabling users to bypass geo-blocks.

Note though, that Chinese users will only be able to access 5 regions including Singapore, a country known for super-fast internet speed. All thanks to the KeepSolid Wise protocols, users can access content in high censored countries.

In restricted networks

Most organizations and schools limit their employee and students' access to the internet. It is often done to drive optimal performance. However, VPN Unlimited does not agree with this stance. It believes the internet is a free space and users should be able to make choices.

So, the VPN can bypass restricted websites and contents, thereby enabling all caliber of users to access the internet freely. When we tested it, we found it was able to access blocked sites seamlessly.

Country and servers

For a VPN review to be complete there is a need to consider the number of servers offered and countries covered by the VPN. These parameters have a tangible effect on the VPN’s performance. Let’s see how VPN Unlimited performs in this regard:

Countries covered

The service provider offers 500+ servers across 80+ locations globally. While the server distribution around the world is in line with top-tier VPNs, the server count could be more, as premium VPNs including ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and so on offer more.

The good thing though is that this VPN goes where others are shy to. There are servers in North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Its servers are also present in highly-censored countries like Vietnam and Turkey. But while it used to have servers in Russia, they are no longer functional.

However, we don't know if these servers are real or merely virtual servers. That information is unavailable and we think it was deliberate. On further inquiry, KeepSolid cited a non-disclosure agreement. We find it very disappointing and distrustful.

Servers

The VPN provides specialized servers for streaming. With this users can stream sites such as Netflix, Hulu, BBC iPlayer, and lots more. However, there is no guarantee that the servers will always be functional. When we tested it, we didn't encounter any problems and were able to stream sites effortlessly.

Sadly, there are no specialized servers for torrenting owing to the company's indifference towards torrenting.

Compatible devices and simultaneous connections

There's no point in a VPN if it’s not compatible with your device. Although most modern service providers are expected to support your device, some support only a handful of devices. Hence, it’s important to test for yourself. We did that for this VPN and here is how it performed:

What devices can I use with VPN Unlimited?

You can use this client with all major platforms. This includes:

  • Apple TV
  • Windows phone
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Linux
  • macOS
  • Windows
  • Window phone

The service also features a browser extension for Opera, Firefox, and Chrome. Besides, it enables you to set up your router, streaming devices, Kodi, NAS, and lots more.

It enables users customize their security and privacy setting. The apps do not have rich features while this may be suitable for beginners, many advanced users may find it lacking.

How many simultaneous connections?

The VPN is quite flexible in this regard. Its different subscription plans allow a varying number of simultaneous connections. The least number of devices it permits is 5 devices while the highest is 10. Hence, users can select the plan corresponding to the number of devices that suit them.

Even at that, some users may find 10 connections too small. For this set of users, you can opt for its KeepSolid. This offers a more expansive simultaneous connection at a little extra cost.

Client support

In using a VPN, there are times you may run into problems while setting up. there are other times you may have pressing issues that need resolution. For these reasons and more, there is a vital need for a VPN company to have a robust client support system in place. Does VPN Unlimited have this?

How to contact it?

The VPN service offers two contact means—24/7 Live chat and email support. The quickest means of contacting the VPN is through its 24/7 live chat, but this is mainly available for premium plans. However, for this to work, you will have to work with the company’s time zone and regions they cover.

Its email platform is one of the fastest you will ever get. We sent a question regarding the cancellation of a subscription and in less than 20 minutes we got a response. This is quite impressive seeing as other services take longer than that. But then, the VPN has made a public pledge on its website, promising to respond to queries within an hour.

Is it good?

Both support platforms are great. we tried out its live chat feature and got an immediate response. The answers were also satisfactory, proving it's not a machine response. Also, its email support is responsive, timely, and helpful.

FAQ/tutorials

The VPN also offers a robust knowledge base. Here there is an extensive FAQ section as well as manuals that detail procedures for app installation, manual configuration, payment methods, and streaming. You will also discover a manual for Windows phones. The articles are very helpful and well written, covering all the common questions and issues users may have.

Value for money

Owing to the stiff competition in the market, value for money has become an important criterion that many users want to access before committing. In this section, we will consider the price structure as well as the payment means.

Price comparison

The VPN service offers three subscription plans—monthly, yearly, and lifetime plan. While the monthly and yearly plans come at a good price, the Lifetime plan offers more value. However, although the Lifetime plan seems the best bet, it can be quite risky given the unpredictability of life. It may be wiser to opt for its yearly plan, that way you can pull out at the end of any year.

  • 1 month plan: $9.99/month
  • 1 year plan: Billed $59.99/year at $4.99/month
  • Lifetime plan: Charged $199.99 once

The VPN allows users to subscribe for either 5 or 10 simultaneous connections. Moving from 5 to 10 simultaneous connections changes the monthly fee to $14.99 per month and the yearly price to $7.49 per month. Lifetime subscribers will need not pay for the upgrade, but that is if they go for the Passwarden password manager (a password manager from the service).

Means of payment

The VPN offers a wide range of payment methods. This includes:

  • Credit cards
  • PayPal
  • iTunes
  • Amazon

Amazingly, the company supports BitPay. This is good news for users who wish to maintain anonymity.

Money-back guarantee

One of the great things about VPN Unlimited its 7-day free trial. However, this is only available on Google Play Store or App Store. But beyond that, it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee, thereby giving you lots of time to decide if it’s the ideal VPN for you.

Any extras?

The service doesn't feature as many extras as we would have loved. Nonetheless, it does have a feature we like.

Split tunneling

Split tunneling isn’t anything new, yet it’s a fantastic feature. It enables users to select which apps and traffic they want to connect to the VPN and which ones they would let the ISP to handle. It's a convenient feature, especially when used for this KeepSolid P2P protection. It enables the app to start up once the torrenting client is opened. Sadly, this feature is only available on Android.

Final thoughts

VPN Unlimited is a great VPN service for Android and Windows users. It offers solid security and protection and good speed too. It's able to unblock most streaming sites including Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and YouTube. Also, it has well-designed apps that are easy to use as well as an excellent client support platform.

On the downside, there’s too much logging, even as it’s a US-based provider. The apps aren’t really rich, while torrenting is only limited to 5 devices.

Overall, it’s a decent VPN even if there are better and cheaper options you can explore.
